WIDER STILL

Age (Melbourne, Vic. : 1854 - 1954), Monday 8 May 1950, page 2

When Rev. Dr. Sidney M. Berry, world-famous Congregationalist was introduced to the audience at Wesley Church Pleasant Sunday Afternoon yesterday, Rev. Dr. Irving Benson said he remembered him, many years ago in Manchester, a slim young figure, just rising in the firmament of the great preachers of England.

A big but still handsome man, Dr. Berry said he expected some reference to his figure when he entered the pulpit.

"Your musical director announced an item, 'Wider still and wider, shall thy bounds be set !' " he explained.

"My only humble request to the musical director is that he won't let the bounds get any wider!"

An Anecdote from Aunty Tess

Aunty Tess had told me about Sidney Berry making a visit to Australia and it would be pretty safe to assume the trip in 1950 was when this occurred.

He came to visit the family at Kew and I think at that time, Morris Logan - his brother-in-law - was living with Aunty Tess and Uncle Angie. Apparently, he was staying with the Swinburne sisters while he was in Melbourne.

I don't know what type of car he arrived in but he was in the back seat and had a very awkward time getting out of the car, in fact was stuck. It is somewhat apropos to the article here.
