BRITISH UNIONS "FOES OF COMMUNISM"

Mercury (Hobart, Tas. : 1860 - 1954), Saturday 8 April 1950, page 9

"THE greatest and most relentless foes of Communism in Britain today are the British trade unions," said the Moderator of the International Congregational Council (Dr. Sidney Berry) in Hobart on Thursday.

He was addressing members of the Hobart Rotary Club at their weekly luncheon.

Dr. Berry said the greatest need to combat Communism was a great spiritual revival, to make men turn from the "silly and frivolous" things of life.

"We should not ask ourselves 'what can I get out of it' or 'where do I come in'?" he said.

"Rather," he added, "we should say 'how can I help and what can I do to assist the growth of this sorely needed revival.' "

The Bishop of Tasmania (the Rt. Rev. G. P. Cranswick) was chairman at the meeting.

Two oversea visitors, Messrs. T. J. Johnson and J. Brown, of London, presented the chairman with the coat of arms of the city of Camberwell, England.
