It is notified that it has been decided by the members of the Westminster Congregational Church to invite the Rev. Sidney M. Berry, M.A., of Carr's-lane Church, Birmingham, to become minister of the church in succession to Dr. Jowett. In the event of Mr. Berry accepting the invitation, Dr. Jowett has expressed his willingness to co-operate in the maintenance of the pulpit by taking one of the services each Sunday for four months in the year. Mr. Berry stands in the front rank of Nonconformist preachers. Ten years ago, when Dr. Jowett left Carr's-lane, Birmingham, to come to Westminister, Mr. Berry succeeded him.
It is announced that the Rev. Sidney M. Berry has declined the invitation to succeed Dr J. H. Jowett as pastor of Westminster Chapel. At a morning service at Westminster Chapel, a letter was read from Mr Berry, in the course of which he said — "I have felt the greatness of the opportunity that the pulpit of Westminster offers, and I have been greatly attracted by the prospect of co-operation with Dr Jowett for a certain number of Sundays in the year. It has, however, been brought home to me unmistakably that at present, at all events, my work is here in Birmingham."
