"ENGLISH Congregationalists love Collins-street and all its folk. I bring you that special message," Rev Dr. Sidney M. Berry, of London, said at Independent Church last night.
Dr. Berry recalled having, as a small boy, met the late Dr. Bevan, one of that church's early preachers, said that other English Congregationalists who had occupied the pulpit, and whom he had known, were Revs. Ernest James, Lytton Richards and Penry Evans.
In his sermon, Dr. Berry said that people on the whole had given up praying, believing it did not accomplish anything.
"Prayer will come back only when you and I believe that our petitions do live," he said.
"To be able to tune in to God and take life's big and little problems to Him for guidance, without adopting any special posture or formula, or giving any outward sign of praying, would work like magic and end all the problems.
"Prayer opens the golden gates, but don't try to lay down rules to God, for there is no measure to what He can give," Dr Berry said.
