LITTLE TREASURES FROM TROVE

I have been trawling through the old newspapers on line going back to the 1830s for family history research. I am forever getting distracted and find myself reading some of the incredible historical stories that I find and I feel obliged to reproduce them so that others can enjoy them too. SUNSET ON THE LOWER YARRA.

Sunset on the Lower Yarra
Sunset on the Lower Yarra

The point whence our view is taken is about a quarter of a mile below the Gasworks, looking southwards. It depicts the new wharves now being constructed by the Harbour Trust, with some of the appliances used in the construction. The steamer Excelsior is seen coming up the river, and several steamers of from 800 to 1,000 tons are shown lying alongside the wharf for the purpose of discharging.

A large quantity of plant imported for the works of the Railway department is discharged here, and is conveyed to Spencer-street along a line recently laid down for that purpose, the course of which is shown in the foreground. The time is sunset, and our artist has attempted to depict, as far as black and white can do so, one of the remarkable sunsets of which we have had so many during the last two or three months, and which are still occasionally seen on certain evenings.
