LITTLE TREASURES FROM TROVE

I have been trawling through the old newspapers on line going back to the 1830s for family history research. I am forever getting distracted and find myself reading some of the incredible historical stories that I find and I feel obliged to reproduce them so that others can enjoy them too. Matriculation Exam

The Australasian Sketcher with Pen and Pencil (Melbourne, Vic. 1873 - 1889)  Sat 24 Jan 1874  Page 178

In our last issue we gave an illustration of the matriculation and civil service examinations proceeding in the Town-hall. The results have since been declared, and it is found that of the 390 candidates 122 passed the matriculation and 214 the civil service examination. It is noticeable that of the four who passed the former examination with credit two were young ladies, daughters of Dr Hearn, of the University of Melbourne. One of these young ladies attained a degree of success that has seldom been surpassed. She passed in all the nine subjects, and with credit in six, including Greek. Eight ladies passed the matriculation and 14 or 15 the civil service.
