Eddowes's Journal, and General Advertiser for Shropshire, and the Principality of Wales - Wednesday 30 June 1880

At the Bedford Regatta, on Thursday last, P. J. Lowe, A. Nightingale, W. Hudson, W. Price (stroke), and W. Stevens (cox.), competed for the Bedford Grand Challenge Cup, and were beaten in their first heat by the Old Bedfordians, after a gallant struggle, by half length.

W. G. Preece, in the junior sculls, won his first heat from W. B. Jessop, of the Old Bedfordians, and, after a row over in the next, won the final from W. H. Logan, Cambridge, by a foot only rowing a splendid race all the way.

Preece had also entered for the senior sculls, and won his first heat with ridiculous ease by two lengths ; in the final his opponent, Powers, of Cambridge, was too much for him, and won anyhow.

The combined photos in the heading are believed to be Samuel and Elizabeth Logan nee Charles. This was the second marriage for Samuel having married Hester Rutt who had been widowed with young children under tragic circumstances.
