Test Last Saturday Great Success

What has been described as the most complete, interesting and instructive (Air Raid Precautions) A.R.P. demonstration held in Williamstown, was held in Chandler St., on Saturday afternoon, when hundreds of residents gathered to witness all branches of the A.R.P. service at work.

At the commencement of the demonstration Mr. McCart, representing the Commonwealth Government addressed the assemblage and appealed to them for full support of the Austerity Loan. His Worship the Mayor (Lieut. T. Briggs), The District Warden (Mr. J. H. Whitwam), the First Aid Commandant (Dr. D. Coutts), and the Transport Officer (Cr. G. Paine) also spoke, and appealed for additional assistance for the various services.

The Area Warden (Mr. Claude D. Hocking) then addressed the gathering on the dangers during an air raid, how these dangers could be reduced to a minimums and the preparations every householder should make to be prepared for an emergency. A most realistic demonstration was then staged which was described in detail by the Area Warden, speaking over an amplifier system, which was generously loaned by Cr. A. Dobbin. When high explosives were dropped, casualties fell in the street, and when wardens arrived on the scene temporary first aid was rendered until the arrival of the stretcher parties, who carried out their duties in an expert manner. The patients were then removed to an emergency hospital on the site, where they received medical attention from the doctor in charge and the nurses in attendance. Whilst the first aid were still in attendance, incendiaries with high explosives were dealt with by the wardens, with assistant lady wardens operating the stirrup pumps.

By this time a large fire had started at the bottom of the street, the fire brigade was called, and the aux. firemen with hose, cart and trailer fire pump were soon on the job, running out two branches and giving a most efficient and impressive display. The fire was hardly under control before a gas attack was staged, the public was warned of the dangers of gas, the contaminated area was roped off by the wardens, and later decontaminated by the decontamination squad, fully dressed in protective clothing and respirators.

The police and auxiliary police were in attendance, under the supervision of Senior Constable Brearly, and did excellent work in restraining the crowd. The following officers of the various branches of the A.R.P. Services were present, and watched the demonstration with keen interest. The District Warden, Mr. J. H. Whitwam, Dr. Coutts, First Aid District Commandant, Cr. G. Paine, Transport Officer, Inspector Kenny, of the Police Force, District Officer Logan, District Inspector Bramwell, and Station Officer Chapman, of the Fire Brigade, District Patrol Leader Lowe, of the Cycle Patrol.

At the close of the demonstration the Area Warden, Mr. Claude D. Hocking. was congratulated from all quarters for having organised such an instructive and large-scale demonstration.
